Herbert Fell Sharp was a British comic artist/illustrator born in London, United Kingdom in the district of Islington, son of Charles Sharp and Catherine née Fell. He immigrated to United States by 1910 married Ruth Sheriff in 1916 in Westchester, New York.
He lived at 31 Poplar Street, Brooklyn and served as a former president to the New Rochelle Art Association in Westchester County, New York, an organization that included J.C. Leyendecker as a prominent member during the 1950's. Sources suggest that Fell Sharp began his career as a comic artist, composing illustrations for the Amalgamated Press comics circa 1900 and "The Jester and Wonder" in 1905.
Mr. Sharp possesses an artistic technique that is easy to identify and yet unique. The people featured in his artwork show details of pointed noises. Sharp's career, like his contemporaries, explored a diversity of avenues in which to market his craft. For example, he sketched artwork that consisted of war themes. As you will see, his art signatures feature his middle name on most prints, but sometimes may include middle and last names together coupled with the year of its completion.

A ca. 1928 Drawing of a Dapper Man with a Pint Glass by Artist Francis Chapin
By Francis Chapin
Located in Chicago, IL
A charismatic, 1920s charcoal on paper drawing of a dapper young man seated beside a pint glass by famed Chicago artist Francis Chapin. Image size: 12 x 9 inches. Matted size: 18 x 14 inches Estate stamped on reverse. Provenance: Estate of the artist.
Francis Chapin, affectionately called the “Dean of Chicago Painters” by his colleagues, was one of the city’s most popular and celebrated painters in his day. Born at the dawn of the 20th Century in Bristolville, Ohio, Chapin graduated from Washington & Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922. He would set down deep roots at the Art Institute of Chicago, exhibiting there over 31 times between 1926 and 1951. In 1927 Chapin won the prestigious Bryan Lathrop Fellowship from the Art Institute – a prize that funded the artist’s yearlong study trip to Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Chapin decided to remain in Chicago, noting the freedom Chicago artists have in developing independently of the pressure to conform to pre-existing molds (as was experienced by artists in New York, for example). Chapin became a popular instructor at the Art Institute, teaching there from 1929 to 1947 and at the Art Institute’s summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan (now called Oxbow) between 1934 – 1938 (he was the director of the school from 1941-1945). Chapin’s contemporaries among Chicago’s artists included such luminaries as Ivan Le Lorraine Albright...

William Thomas Smedley Framed Watercolor of Gentleman Smoker
Located in New York, US
Our exceptional watercolor on paper by the American painter and illustrator, William Thomas Smedley (1858-1920), depicts a distinguished gentleman smoker standing beside a street lamp. Signed and dated 1894. Mounted in period giltwood frame originally glazed and now missing glass. We may install new plexiglass prior to shipment.
William Thomas Smedley was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1858 and died in Bronxville, New York in 1920. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later entered the Paris studio of Jean Paul Laurens. He submitted paintings regularly at prestigious exhibitions both in America and abroad during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including the Paris Salon and the Universal Exposition of 1900.
Around the turn of the century the village of Bronxville, located just north of Manhattan, became the center of a small suburban artists' colony. Otto Bacher settled there in 1896 and was followed a year later by Will Hicock Low. Smedley moved to Bronxville in 1898 and was soon joined by his fellow Pennsylvanian, Milne Ramsey.
