Description:
A delightful original watercolour painting by the 20th-century French Impressionist artist, Maurice Mazeilie. This painting captures a serene beach scene with two figures relaxing enjoying the view of the pier. Whilst several figures can be seen walking down to the sea. The warm earthy tones of the sand contrast beautifully with the soft blues of the sky and sea, creating a peaceful and lively seaside atmosphere.
Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924 - 2021):
Mazeilie lived and worked in Montmartre, where he had a studio on the famous Place du Tertre. Place du Tertre, located just a stone’s throw away from the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, is known for its vibrant community of artists and is considered one of the key locations in Montmartre's artistic history. Since the late 19th century, Montmartre has been a haven for artists, housing greats like Picasso and Modigliani, and providing inspiration with its scenic streets and bustling cafés.
Place du Tertre and Montmartre Art Scene:
Historical Significance: Place du Tertre became known as an artist's hub during the Belle Époque era, with painters such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, and Degas frequenting the area. By the 20th century, it became synonymous with art and creativity.
Artist Colony: The square remains one of the few places in Paris where artists can publicly display and sell their works directly to tourists and collectors, keeping the artistic tradition alive.
Mazeilie's Legacy: His works often depict urban and coastal landscapes. He had a love for Montmartre, Paris, and the Brittany coastline, where he also maintained a studio. His impressionistic style and vibrant scenes reflect his dedication to portraying the world around him.
