Medium: Encaustic
An Emptiness I Needed to Know
Located in Fairfield, CT
Hesse describes of his work, "encaustic is the perfect paint with which to explore this balance between control and chaos. In trying to wrestle a recognizable image from a fluid and often incorrigible medium, a tension emerges, echoing the drama outside the window." Choosing to focus on the Los Angeles landscape, for Hesse, "the act of building is generally considered synonymous with growth and progress. In the cities I’ve called home, construction more often seems the imposition of one will upon another. Visually, the result is a sort of competition; angles wedge their way into vegetation and undaunted, the foliage always pushes back. All it takes is a look out of an airplane window...

“A Thin Wash of Morning Rain”
Located in Toronto, ON
Encaustic painting is an ancient art form and was practiced by artists as far back as the 5th century B.C. The word encaustic comes from Greek and means “to burn in”, which refers to the process of fusing the paint. The technique uses heated wax to which coloured pigments are added. The molten wax is applied to a firm surface–usually prepared wood, paper, or canvas. Encaustic has a long history, but it is as versatile as any 20th-century medium. Brushes are used to apply and shape the wax before it cools, then it can be polished to a high gloss, it can be modelled, sculpted, textured, and combined with collage materials. The wax cools immediately, so that there is no drying time, yet it can always be reworked. Encaustic paintings do not have to be varnished or protected by glass. "A Thin Wash of Morning Rain...

"Quickening" Female Abstract Expressionist Artist 1970 Red Black White LARGE OIL
Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Born in 1934, the work of Suzanne Bloomfield represents the life force which binds us all -- a universal symbol for the soul's transformation. Bloomfield believes that painting is the discovering of beautiful secrets which are only uncovered in the searching. Her painting blends encaustic (an ancient painting method which adds pigment to heated beeswax) with oils. Her selected exhibitions include: Permanent Collection Archives, American Album, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; Foreign Exhibition Tour of India, National Association of Women Artists-Centennial Year, New York City; and International Latin American Exposition, Miami Florida. Ciao Gaia
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this epic Tony Scherman landscape painting. While landscapes are an important part of the artist's oeuvre, they do not come on the secondary market very often. Tony Scherman (b. 1950) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. He is renowned internationally for his work, typically executed in encaustic, a mix of wax and oil (one of the most difficult mediums to work in). Scherman frequently alludes to the grandeur of past centuries, both in his subject matter and his technique of painting with encaustic. The artist is continuing a tradition, of working with this material, that has been propelled through art history by a diverse number of canonical artists including Pieter Claesz, Caravaggio, and Cézanne. My Mummy Jocasta
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Tony Scherman (b. 1950) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. He is renowned internationally for his work, typically executed in the highly temperamental medium of encaustic, which is a wax-based paint equivalent. Scherman's moody palette and sumptuous portraits (whether contemporary, historical or allegorical) reference a range of masters, including Goya and Manet, yet his works are visceral and contemporary. Scherman's allusions to both history, and the history of visual art, are constants in his oeuvre. This work, which depicts Oedipus' mother/lover Jocasta in carnal ecstasy, comes from one of the artist's most recognizable series, The Seduction of Oedipus. "Oedipus Rex" is an ancient text...
