Raymond Pettibon 1993-2006 (a collection of 6 announcements)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Raymond Pettibon 1993-2006: A curated set of 6 vintage Raymond Pettibon illustrated announcement cards. Medium: 6 offset printed announcement cards. 1993-2006. Dimensions ranging from: 4.125 x 5.375 inches to 8.75 x 5.5 inches. Condition: Each in good to very good overall vintage condition. Each unsigned from an edition of unknown. Published on the occasion of the following Pettibon exhibitions: - Ikon LTD./Kay Richards, 1999 - Feature 1993 - Macba 2002 - Regen Projects 2006 - Santa Monica: Museum of Modern Art 2001 - David Zwirner 1997 Further background on announcement cards: "The only way you could let people know a show was happening was through an announcement or a poster. The art world was also much smaller at the time, so if you mailed out 200 invites, you were reaching a good core of the art world." (Rosen). Raymond Pettibon is a contemporary American artist known for his stylized ink drawings combining images and text. His inventive narratives blend historical content with consumer culture to yield incisive critiques of contemporary society. “I was making my work as transparent as possible, without equivocations, without calling attention to itself, without apology,” he explained. “There's a lot of conventions in the art world that are not to be transgressed, but my economy of means doesn't abide by those strictures.” Born Raymond Ginn on June 16, 1957 in Tucson, AZ, the artist is self-taught, but cites drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instructive to his practice. Deriving inspiration from comics, cartoons, and other pop culture iconography, Pettibon began designing album covers and ephemera for his brother’s band Black Flag in the mid-1970s. He went on to produce cover art for Sonic Youth, the Minutemen, and the Foo Fighters. In 2017, the artist was the subject of the major retrospective “Raymond Pettibon: A Pen of All Work,” held at the New Museum in New York, where he currently lives and works. Today, his works can be found in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others. Canadian Post Modern Pop Art Lithograph Vintage Poster Memphis Galerie Maeght
Located in Surfside, FL
Vintage gallery exhibition poster. The Galerie Maeght is a gallery of modern art in Paris, France, and Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The gallery was founded in 1936 in Cannes. The Paris gallery was started in 1946 by Aimé Maeght. The artists exhibited are mainly from France and Spain. Since 1945, the gallery has presented the greatest modern artists such as Matisse, Bonnard, Braque, Miró, and Calder. In 1956, Adrien Maeght opened a new parisian venue. The second generation of “Maeght” artists was born: Bazaine, Andre Derain, Giacometti, Kelly, Raoul Ubac, then Riopelle, Antoni Tapies, Pol Bury and Adami, among others. Jean-Paul Riopelle, CC GOQ (7 October 1923 – 12 March 2002) was a painter and sculptor from Quebec, Canada. He became the first Canadian painter (since James Wilson Morrice) to attain widespread international recognition. Born in Montreal, Riopelle began drawing lessons in 1933 and continued through 1938. He studied engineering, architecture and photography at the école polytechnique in 1941. In 1942 he enrolled at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal but shifted his studies to the less academic école du Meuble, graduating in 1945. He studied under Paul-Émile Borduas in the 1940s and was a member of Les Automatistes movement. Breaking with traditional conventions in 1945 after reading André Breton's Le Surréalisme et la Peinture, he began experimenting with non-objective (or non-representational) painting. He was one of the signers of the Refus global manifesto. In 1947 Riopelle moved to Paris and continued his career as an artist, where, after a brief association with the surrealists (he was the only Canadian to exhibit with them) he capitalized on his image as a "wild Canadian". His first solo exhibition took place in 1949 at the Surrealist meeting place, Galerie La Dragonne in Paris. Riopelle married Françoise Lespérance in 1946; the couple had two daughters but separated in 1953. In 1959 he began a relationship with the American painter Joan Mitchell, Living together throughout the 1960s, they kept separate homes and studios near Giverny, where Monet had lived. They influenced one another greatly, as much intellectually as artistically, but their relationship was a stormy one, fueled by alcohol. The relationship ended in 1979. His 1992 painting Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg is Riopelle's tribute to Mitchell, who died that year, and is regarded as a high point of his later work. Riopelle's style in the 1940s changed quickly from Surrealism to Lyrical Abstraction (related to abstract expressionism), in which he used myriad tumultuous cubes and triangles of multicolored elements, facetted with a palette knife, spatula, or trowel, on often large canvases to create powerful atmospheres. The presence of long filaments of paint in his painting from 1948 through the early 1950s[8] has often been seen as resulting from a dripping technique like that of Jackson Pollock. Rather, the creation of such effects came from the act of throwing, with a palette knife or brush, large quantities of paint onto the stretched canvas. Riopelle's voluminous impasto became just as important as color. His oil painting technique allowed him to paint thick layers, producing peaks and troughs as copious amounts of paint were applied to the surface of the canvas. Riopelle, though, claimed that the heavy impasto was unintentional: "When I begin a painting," he said, "I always hope to complete it in a few strokes, starting with the first colours I daub down anywhere and anyhow. But it never works, so I add more, without realizing it. I have never wanted to paint thickly, paint tubes are much too expensive. But one way or another, the painting has to be done. When I learn how to paint better, I will paint less thickly." When Riopelle started painting, he would attempt to finish the work in one session, preparing all the color he needed before hand: "I would even go as far to say—obviously I don't use a palette, but the idea of a palette or a selection of colors that is not mine makes me uncomfortable, because when I work, I can't waste my time searching for them. It has to work right away." A third element, range of gloss, in addition to color and volume, plays a crucial role in Riopelle's oil paintings. Paints are juxtaposed so that light is reflected off the surface not just in different directions but with varying intensity, depending on the naturally occurring gloss finish (he did not varnish his paintings). These three elements; color, volume, and range of gloss, would form the basis of his oil painting technique throughout his long and prolific career. Riopelle received an Honorable Mention at the 1952 São Paulo Art Biennial. In 1953 he showed at the Younger European Painters exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The following year Riopelle began exhibiting at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York. In 1954, works by Riopelle, along with those of B. C. Binning and Paul-Émile Borduas represented Canada at the Venice Biennale. He was the sole artist representing Canada at the 1962 Venice Biennale in an exhibit curated by Charles Comfort...

Keith Haring No On 64 (Keith Haring Aids activist announcement)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Keith Haring ‘No On 64’ (Keith Haring 1986): A rare vintage 1986 Keith Haring activist announcement illustrated by Haring in effort to denounce California's Proposition 64. Proponents of the then ballot, argued that the measure would merely return AIDS to the list of communicable diseases under public health laws. Opponents characterized 64 as an effort to force HIV-positive individuals out of their jobs and into quarantine. The measure was soundly defeated by voters. A rare historic 1980s Keith Haring activist collectible with striking imagery; seldom comes to market. Offset printed folding announcement card. 8.5x11 inches. Good overall vintage condition. Minor signs of aging & handling. Printed signature from a scarce edition of unknown; few known to have survived. Please message us for more works in this category. Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist known for his illustrative depictions of figures and symbols. His white chalk drawings could often been found on the blank poster marquees in New York’s public spaces and subways. “I don't think art is propaganda,” he once stated. “It should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.” Born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, PA, he grew up in neighboring Kutztown, where he was inspired to draw from an early age by Walt Disney cartoons and his father who was an amateur cartoonist. After briefly studying commercial art in Pittsburgh, Haring came across a show of the works of Pierre Alechinksy and decided to pursue a career in fine art instead. He moved to New York in the late 1970s to attend the School of Visual Arts, and soon immersed himself in the city’s graffiti culture. By the mid-1980s, he had befriended fellow artists Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and collaborated with celebrities like the singer Grace Jones. Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988, Haring’s prodigious career was brief, and he died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990 at the age of 31. Before his death, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation, a non-profit committed to raising awareness of the illness through art programing and community outreach. Throughout his career, Haring made his art widely available through the location of his murals, as well as through the Pop Shop—Haring's own storefront which he used to sell his memorabilia. The artist’s mural Crack is Wack (1986), can still be seen today on a retaining wall along FDR Drive in Manhattan. Haring’s works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Dennis Hopper Photographs 1961-1967 Limited Edition Hand Signed Monograph in box
Located in New York, NY
Dennis Hopper Photographs 1961 - 1967 (Limited Edition Hand Signed), 2009 Hardcover Book in Clamshell Box. Hand Signed and numbered 1327/1500 Hand signed by Dennis Hopper on the colophon page. 19 × 14 1/4 × 3 1/10 inches This is the limited edition (signed and numbered) collector's edition, not to be confused with the later mass market edition. Hand signed, hardcover book in a clamshell box from an edition of 1500. 17.3 x 13 inches (book) 19 x 14 1/4 inches (box) 546 pages Accompanied by Certificate of Guarantee issued by Alpha 137 Gallery During the 1960s, Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) carried a camera everywhere—on film sets and locations, at parties, in diners, bars and galleries, driving on freeways, and walking in political marches. He photographed movie idols, pop stars, writers, artists, girlfriends, and complete strangers. Along the way he captured some of the most intriguing moments of his generation with a keen and intuitive eye. From a selection of photographs compiled by Hopper and gallerist Tony Shafrazi—more than a third of them previously unpublished—this Collector’s Edition distills the essence of Hopper’s prodigious photographic career, documenting the likes of Tina Turner in the studio, Andy Warhol at his first West Coast show, Paul Newman on set, and Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. In many ways this work is photography as film, a poignant narrative expressed through a series of stark images—early shots of Tijuana bullfights, LA happenings, and urban street scenes show an experimental freedom that would translate into the vivid cinematic imagery of Easy Rider and beyond. The images are accompanied by introductory essays from Tony Shafrazi and legendary West Coast art pioneer Walter Hopps, as well as an extensive biography by journalist Jessica Hundley. With excerpts from Victor Bockris’s interviews of Hopper’s famous subjects, friends, and family, this is an unprecedented exploration of the life and mind of one of America’s most fascinating personalities. CONTRIBUTORS The photographer Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) was an acclaimed artist, actor, screenwriter, and director who first impressed audiences with his performances in Rebel Without A Cause (1955) and Giant (1956). He changed the face of American cinema with Easy Rider (1969), which he cowrote, directed, and starred in. Hopper went on to act in hundreds of memorable films and television shows, including Apocalypse Now (1979), Blue Velvet (1986), Hoosiers (1986), True Romance (1993), Basquiat (1997), Elegy (2008), and the TV series Crash (2008). Hopper began painting as a child and started taking photos in 1961, after his then wife Brooke Hayward gave him a 35 mm Nikon camera for his birthday. His paintings and photography have been exhibited all over the world, including the recent retrospective, “Dennis Hopper and the New Hollywood” in Paris. Dennis Hopper passed away May 29, 2010, in Venice, CA. The contributing authors An Englishman who moved to New York in 1973 and became connected to Andy Warhol, the Factory, and Interview, Victor Bockris has written books on Lou Reed, Andy Warhol, Keith Richards, William S. Burroughs, Patti Smith, and Muhammad Ali. Walter Hopps (1933–2005) was one of the premier curators of 20th-century art. Cofounder of Los Angeles’s Ferus Gallery and director of the Pasadena Museum of Art, he was responsible for the first retrospectives of Kurt Schwitters, Joseph Cornell, and Marcel Duchamp. A key advocate of American Pop art, his 1962 survey “New Painting of Common Objects” was the first of its kind. After directing the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, he went on to build the Menil Collection museum in Houston and became its founding director in 1987. A filmmaker and frequently published art, music, and film journalist, Jessica Hundley has directed several documentaries and recently completed her second book, a biography of country-rock legend Gram Parsons...

Original Vintage Color World War 2 Propaganda Poster TAKE CARE Offset Lithograph
Located in Surfside, FL
TAKE CARE Don't be delayed by V.D.; 1946 military poster by Franz Oswald Schiffers. the 1946 U.S. (or Australian) World War II (WWII) health poster warning soldiers overseas of the consequences of venereal disease. Thisis a vintage 1946 public service announcement poster by Franz O. Schiffers (1902-1976). Schiffers was commissioned to create several posters warning against venereal disease for the U.S servicemen stationed overseas. The artwork is bold, clear and direct. In the post-World War II era, the piece sent a serious message to prevent contracting disease through relations with foreigners. In today's day and age, these pieces are quite humorous and decorative. Virile soldiers are shown to be up against the looming threat of venereal disease. The soldier standing on the pier watching his ship sail away would have to make a very embarrassing explanation to his wife or girlfriend as to why he was left behind. Franz Oswald Schiffers (born August 5, 1902 in Eilendorf in Aachen , February 12, 1976 in Berlin ) was a graphic artist and film poster artist . He was one of the first graphic artists of the 1930s to achieve photorealistic effects in their works. At his father's request, Schiffers initially trained as a teacher before moving to Berlin in 1925 and became a graphic designer at UFA (Universum Film AG). After designing a series of movie posters there, Schiffers became independent in 1932 as a commercial artist (now a graphic designer). In the 1930s, Schiffers specialized in advertising posters for beverage producers - especially beer advertising. The trademark of his beer posters is the meticulous design of beer glass with shiny drops of water that trickle down the misted glass. In this photorealistic context one also speaks of " veristic " graphics. After the seizure of power by the National SocialistsNazis , Schiffers temporarily worked for the Reich Propaganda Ministry. He designed u. a. the so-called "shadow man campaign" with the well-known slogan "enemy hears with!" - A German graphic artist who designed movie posters and advertisements in late-1920s and early 1930s Germany. During the Nazi era, Schiffers was commissioned by the Nazi propaganda office to create German propaganda...

XIV Olympic Winter Games Sarajevo - Poster after Gabriel Stupica - 1984
Located in Roma, IT
Vintage poster on paper realized in 1984 in occasion of the XIV Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo. Edition of 1000. Created by the Slovenian painter Gabriel Stupica, one of the foremost representatives of post-war Yugoslav modernism, this evocative composition was commissioned for the XIV Olympic Winter Games, Sarajevo 1984 (Yugoslavia). Executed in Stupica’s distinctive lyrical and figurative style, the work depicts a dynamic, dreamlike athlete in motion, surrounded by abstract Olympic rings, against a vaporous lavender and blue background. The piece encapsulates both the energy of winter sports and the poetic sensibility of Stupica’s artistic vision. Stupica, a member of the Ljubljana School of Graphic Arts and a central figure in Slovenian modern painting, was internationally recognized for his psychologically charged and symbolist works. His contribution to the Sarajevo Olympic poster series reflects both the optimism of the Games and the avant-garde tendencies of Yugoslav art...
