(80 x 160 mm.) This initial showing Christ and the Apostles gathered for the Last Supper is without doubt the work of the Bolognese artist Nicolo di Giacomo. Research into his artistic production has gradually brought to light not only the singularity of his style, but also the leading role he played in Bolognese book illustration. Including many signed and dated works, his oeuvre was first compiled by Paolo d?€™Ancona; to this early catalogue, Pasut and Medica have added considerable details. According to Bollati, this initial belongs to the later work of the artist, a dating borne out by a Compare, for example, this miniature with some of his mature works: Lucan's Pharsalia dated 1373 (Milan, Biblioteca Trivulziana, MS 691), a cutting in the Fondazione Cini in Venice (n. 2043), miniatures taken from a Choir Book in the Certosa di Lucca, which were probably commissioned at the beginning of the bishopric of Niccolo di Lazzaro Guinigi between 1394 and 1402 and are now in various museums and private collections. More precise evidence is provided by the Libri del creditori del Monte di Pubbliche Prestanze of 1394 to 1395 (Bologna, Archivio di Stato, MSS 25-27) and a further leaf (New York, ex-Kraus Collection) signed "Nicolaus f.", which Medica believes was part of another Libro dei creditori del Monte, now missing (1987, pp. 193-195). To these can be added Seneca's Tragedies of 1395 (Venice, Biblioteca Marciana, cod. lat. XII, 26), which constitutes further evidence of the final phase of his activity, which probably ended in 1401. The illustrations in these codices show the graphic realism and expressiveness which were the hallmarks of the artist from the outset. This miniature is no exception, as can be seen from the freer, more open layout, and the attention paid to the features of the characters. The narration is lively and immediate, but the chiaroscuro is more marked and the figures more severe. Turning away from late Gothic linearity, Nicolo di Giacomo shows the influence of Giotto, whose style was gaining ground in Bolognese artistic circles towards the end of the century.

Salvador Dali (1904-1989) is Surrealism's most accomplished and iconic practitioner.
