About the Item
This atmospheric seascape signed and dated by Carl Lindqvist (1856–1941) shows a wind-tossed coast under dramatic skies, where dark clouds part to reveal sun-tinted light on the horizon. A sailing boat makes its way out toward the distant horizon and the wind stricken sea hits the rocky shore. The painting exemplifies Lindqvist’s sensitive handling of maritime light and mood, capturing both the serenity and power of the sea.
Carl L. Lindqvist was a Swedish artist active around the turn of the 20th century, born in 1856 and deceased in 1941.
He signed and dated works over a few decades, yet relatively little is known about his life and career. In this seascape, however, he succeeds in capturing the quiet transcendence of dusk after a storm along the coastline, rendered with sensitivity and a finely attuned sense of atmosphere.
Though detailed biographical records of exhibitions and formal training are scarce, Lindqvist is documented as a Swedish painter whose works were created in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
