About the Item
Lost by the Shore is a framed wall sculpture by Carolyn Millstein, blending reclaimed copper with stone and glass in a quilt-like composition. The surface features an intricate patchwork of angular copper pieces in deep reds, russet, and bronze tones, stitched together with steel wire. At the lower edge, a cluster of stones and glass elements introduces sculptural dimension, projecting outward and creating a tactile contrast that evokes natural rocks and minerals along a shoreline.
Artwork is hung within a custom dark wood floater frame with all archival materials. 15.5 x 16 inches (unframed), 18 x 18.75 inches (framed)
Millstein’s work reflects her philosophy: “For me, the material invites the process… I like to stretch my own expectations of one material—metal—by trying to get it to behave like something it’s not, to cross over to the realm of other materials—such as fabric.” In this piece, copper mimics the softness of textiles while maintaining its inherent strength, creating a dialogue between comfort and risk. The composition suggests both geological permanence and the fleeting beauty of coastal landscapes, honoring resourcefulness and craftsmanship through reclaimed materials.
