About the Item

"MY BAD" is an original wall-hanging sculpture by Charles Clary as part of the artist's popular "Text-i-monial" series. To create the artwork, Clary hand cuts a series of individual sheets of paper that he then layers and spaces to create the dimensionality of the piece. The layers are inset into a ‘gallery cradle’ style panel with wood sides that is finished with patterned wallpaper on archival mat board on the front. The final piece measures 12 inches in height by 12 inches in width by 2.5 inches in depth. The artwork is signed by the artist en verso. Charles Clary’s ongoing “Text-I-Monial” series continues with colorful patterns and pithy phrases in an exciting blowout installation. Clary’s signature process of hand-cut and layered paper sculptures adds a literal and metaphorical depth to everyday exclamations and tongue-in-cheek comebacks. Clary’s play on words assemblies are formidable in their quantity and their dynamism, pulling from classic Southern charm – BLESS YOUR HEART – to universal exclamations of discovery – CRAP. What started as a random departure into typography has now become a revelation on the currency of language, easily dispersed but adds lightness and value to any interaction. Charles Clary was born in 1980 in Morristown, Tennessee. He received his BFA in painting with honors from Middle Tennessee State University and his MFA in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design. He has shown in exhibitions at SPRING/BREAK Art Show New York, SCOPE Art Miami Beach, Galerie Evolution-Pierre Cardin in Paris, France, The Netherlands’ CODA Museum Paper Biennial in 2021, Art of Paper Fair in New York City, and many other international, national, and regional juried, group, solo, and museum exhibitions. Charles has exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally in numerous solo and group shows, is represented by Paradigm Gallery + Studio in Philadelphia, R02 Gallery in Dallas, Texas, and Patrajdas Contemporary Gallery in Ogden, Utah. Clary currently lives and works in Conway, South Carolina, where he is an Associate Professor of Studio Art and Foundations Coordinator at Coastal Carolina University. Clary has been featured in numerous print and Internet interviews including, Create! Magazine, PICKCHUR Magazine, Candyfloss Magazine, This is Colossal, WIRED magazine (US and UK), Hi-Fructose, Beautiful Decay, Bluecanvas Magazine, and This Is Colossal. He has also been featured in publications including 500 Paper Objects, Paper Works, Paper Art, Papercraft 2, PUSH: Paper, and The New Twenties. Clary won Top Prize at the 2016 ArtFields Competition in Lake City, SC, and in 2019 he won both People’s Choice Award for 2D and the Merit Prize at ArtFields.

"Poner en Palabras" Traditional Wooden Typography on Reclaimed Poster Paper
By Ro Barragan
Located in New York, NY
In Ro Barragan's latest work we explore a production of typographic posters that seeks to highlight the multiplicity of meanings in everyday messages. Words meet, bifurcate, overlap, amalgamate and juxtapose in speeches and the context of communications. It is in this complex multiplicity, that manifests itself in a printed text, which also functions as an image. The material used is the same as the one historically used in urban advertising posters: the work is developed by using typographic printing methods, with mobile types of wood, in typographic families dating back to the last century. The works of art are printed on sulfite paper of various sizes. This piece comes displayed on a black contemporary frame under glass. Art measures 42 x 27.5 in Frame measures 47 x 32.5 in The machines of the early 20th century and manual presses of various sizes are used for printing, which still works in historical workshops in Argentina – Pucará printing shop in La Tablada - and in the Ilusión Gráfica workshop, owned by Ro Barragán, where it is sought to continue the tradition and the typographic trade, linking its production with artistic practices. Ro holds a Master in Aesthetics and Art Theory by the National University of La Plata, all while developing artistic activities since 1994. She has participated in collective and individual exhibitions in Painting, Engraving, Objects, Digital Art, Installations and Interactive Art, in Buenos Aires and other cities of Argentina, Bogotá, Rome, and Miami. She also has developed art activities in the context of the street, through stickers and posters. She is a Teacher of the Engraving and Complementary Printed Art Workshop at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the National University of La Plata and a teacher of the typography workshop at the Museo de Calcos y Escultura comparada Ernesto de la Cárcova, city of Buenos Aires. She is the creator of Ilusión Gráfica, a typographic printing company that seeks to preserve the tradition of printing with wooden mobile...
