About the Item
This contemporary, mixed media textile mandala by Donna Sharrett contains guitar string ball-ends, clothing, needlework, jewelry, and thread. Glittering gold faceted beads at the center are outlined with a circle of pearls in ivory and gold surrounded by pale peach fabric and light golden orange threading. A checkered black and white fabric is stitched into points around the edge of the mandala with little silver metal beads on the tips of the points.
Framed in a square 10 x 10 inch light natural wood float frame, 4.5 x 4 inches unframed.
As Sharrett's statement asserts, "I have become a custodian of memories; my works, repositories for keepsakes.
Handmade doll’s clothes, jewelry, buttons; worn bedspreads, clothing, tablecloths
napkins – were given to me by those who wished to have their personal treasures included in my work. Yard sales
consignment shops yielded evocative objects now out of fashion or in disrepair. These gifts
discoveries join the repertoire of symbolically significant materials which have informed my work – rose petals, dirt
hair.
Guitar-strings are used as a dedication to my brother Scot Sharrett, as are the song titles chosen to name the works. A variety of needlework techniques are used, including crochet, embroidery and needlelace."
