About the Item
This contemporary textile mixed media mandala by Donna Sharrett contains guitar string ball-ends, clothing, needlework, jewelry, and thread, and is framed in a square 10 x 10 inch light natural wood float frame (5 x 5 inches unframed).
Rhinestone studded beads and a ball link chain surround a light beige doily lace fabric swatch layered atop a yellow fabric at the center, encircled by a pale pink fabric with white stitching and buttons. A black and white plaid fabric with gems at each corner of the points is stitched into strips around the edge of the mandala over yellow stitched strips of fabric with little gold colored beads on the tips of the points.
As Sharrett's statement asserts, "I have become a custodian of memories; my works, repositories for keepsakes.
Handmade doll’s clothes, jewelry, buttons; worn bedspreads, clothing, tablecloths
napkins – were given to me by those who wished to have their personal treasures included in my work. Yard sales
consignment shops yielded evocative objects now out of fashion or in disrepair. These gifts
discoveries join the repertoire of symbolically significant materials which have informed my work – rose petals, dirt
hair.
Guitar-strings are used as a dedication to my brother Scot Sharrett, as are the song titles chosen to name the works. A variety of needlework techniques are used, including crochet, embroidery and needle lace. "
