About the Item
This contemporary mixed media botanical artwork by Donna Sharrett is composed of fabric, trimming, thread, guitar strings and ball-ends, and framed in museum glass with all archival materials in a light natural wood float frame. Leaves made of a delicately detailed fabric are stitched with gold along the edges and little beads on the tips of the points.
Dated and initialed in embroidery on recto, titled and dated on verso (backboard). 18 x 30 inches (unframed), 23 x 35 inches (framed), framed in a white rubbed ash float frame with non-glare museum glass.
As Sharrett's statement asserts, "I have become a custodian of memories; my works, repositories for keepsakes.
Handmade doll’s clothes, jewelry, buttons; worn bedspreads, clothing, tablecloths
napkins – were given to me by those who wished to have their personal treasures included in my work. Yard sales
consignment shops yielded evocative objects now out of fashion or in disrepair. These gifts
discoveries join the repertoire of symbolically significant materials which have informed my work – rose petals, dirt
hair.
Guitar-strings are used as a dedication to my brother Scot Sharrett, as are the song titles chosen to name the works. A variety of needlework techniques are used, including crochet, embroidery and needlelace."
