About the Item

"Calligraphy" is an original mid-20th-century abstract painting by celebrated Denver artist Edward Marecak (1919–1993). Executed in mixed media on paper, the composition features dynamic, gestural brushwork in a striking palette of ochre, cyan, black, white, and red. The rhythmic forms and layered textures evoke the energy of written script, reflecting Marecak’s deep interest in myth, symbolism, and the expressive power of line and color. Signed and dated 1964 by the artist in the lower right and titled on the reverse. Unframed; custom framing services are available upon request. About the Artist: Edward Marecak was a prominent figure in the mid-20th-century Colorado art scene, known for his bold abstract compositions and mythologically inspired imagery. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Marecak settled in Denver, where he became part of a vibrant community of modernist painters. His work blends elements of Abstract Expressionism, folk art, and spiritual symbolism, earning him lasting recognition as one of Colorado’s most distinctive postwar artists. A powerful and expressive example of Marecak’s mature style—ideal for collectors of mid-century modern, American abstract, or Colorado modernist art.
