I aim to capture the vibrant celebration of masquerades, embodying both aesthetic richness and therapeutic significance within our society. The masquerade, adorned with modern dresses, stands as a contemporary testament to the fusion of tradition and modernity. It serves not only as a visual spectacle but also as a symbol of cultural continuity.
This piece delves into the therapeutic functions embedded in the masquerade tradition, offering a profound connection to our ancestors and heritage. It is a celebration that goes beyond the visual, resonating with the spiritual and cultural essence of our people. However, it’s disheartening to observe the unjust demonization and neglect that this integral aspect of our heritage often faces. Instead of being celebrated for its role in promoting our rich cultural identity, the masquerade is at times sidelined.
Let this artwork be a call to action, urging us to appreciate and promote our cultural legacy. In recognizing the therapeutic and aesthetic value of masquerades, we pay homage to our ancestors and traditions, fostering a deeper connection to our roots in the contemporary tapestry of our society.
About Artist
Emmanuel Ojebola was born in southwest Nigeria Eruwa Oyo state in the late 90s. He had his secondary education in the Baptist model High school Sango Eruwa where he developed his interest in the art using the course of his junior secondary school education.
His interest in art came from learning from his then-creative art teacher (Mr. Segun Adesope) before proceeding to improve his art skills at the Ibarapa Polytechnic Eruwa. He loves to work with mixed media but mainly with coffee acrylic and oil. His passion for African black women and children with the childhood care he got from his mother during his childhood days is an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
He believes women are Virgo and sees them as gods here on earth. He sees himself as a creator who uses his coffee to create human figures with depth and meaningful art pieces.
Emmanuel Ojebola now practices as a full-time studio artist with a well-known and talented artist Oluwole Omofemi. And he sees the likes of Cesar Santos, Eddie Filer, and Oluwole Omofemi as inspirational figures. He sees his art as a part of him and a way for him to express the way he sees the world and its beauty.
