The work is titled “Teatro dell’Opera Roma Caracalla”, and continues his exploration of the relationship between the cosmic and the theatrical, the infinite and the staged.
The image creates a striking vertical split: at the bottom, the ruins house a performance attended by an earthly audience; above, a constellation of planets including, and (Terra) float in a deep, star-filled sky. This juxtaposition evokes the sense of human art as a small but luminous gesture under the vastness of the universe.
Paolini uses circular cutouts — one showing musical notation, others showing celestial bodies — as symbolic portals. They connect earthly performance to cosmic order, suggesting that art and music are part of a larger, universal harmony.
The ancient Roman ruins stand as monuments to enduring cultural legacy, while the planets and stars suggest timeless infinity. This tension between transient human events and eternal cosmic cycles is a hallmark of Paolini’s conceptual thinking.
By layering the celestial map over a live performance, the collage turns the entire cosmos into a kind of grand theatre — and our earthly spectacles become echoes of a larger, universal drama.
