About the Item

Herbert Zangs Knickfaltung (Folded), 1955 Signed and dated lower left Cotton cloth folded and painted with dispersion 42 x 32 inches Provenance Private Collection, Krefeld, Germany Private Collection, New York Herbert Zangs was a German artist famous for his art pieces that were mostly one color. His work showed he liked to create art in a casual and spontaneous way. He was born on March 27, 1924, in Krefeld, Germany, and he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf from 1945 to 1950, just a few months after World War II ended. While he was there, he made friends with Joseph Beuys and got to know Günther Grass. The atmosphere after the war had a big impact on Zangs’ style, during this period he created collages and paintings that are all covered in ash-white paint, reminding viewers of the destruction caused by war. Zangs earned the nickname “enfant terrible” in the German art scene, similar to his friend Beuys. He became linked to the Art Informel movement, which turned away from strict geometric designs, choosing instead a more natural way of creating art. Besides his abstract art, he also made expressive and figurative paintings. In the 1950s, Zangs traveled a lot around Europe, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Russia, Japan, and the USA. These trips gave him ideas for many paintings and watercolors he called "Reisebilder". From the mid-1960s onward, he often visited Paris. In 1975, he was part of Documenta 6 in Kassel, with some of his works now displayed at the Museum Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin. Herbert Zangs died on March 26, 2003, in Krefeld, Germany.
