About the Item

mixed media on paper; unframed signed lower right Neoromantic painter Hiro Yokose fuses multiple layers of wax and oil paint to create mysterious, veiled landscapes illuminated with flashes of light in the sky and reflections on the water. His works are elegant landscapes that impart the viewer with a sense of contemplation and stillness. His technique involves a unique layering of beeswax and oil paint giving his work the incredibly rich sense of depth and texture. Yokose’s painting style evokes a traditional Japanese painting aesthetic of delicate, lyrical greens, browns, and blues, yet the atmospheric works posses their won sense of serenity and postmodernist balance between painterly abstraction and representation. The new work is punctuated with warmer golden casts of light to elicit pure and tranquil moments of luminosity and space. Playing with the viewer’s perception Yokose’s sensual works invite engagement in a simultaneous experience of recognition and mystery. Hiro Yokose’s work is included in many public collections including San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA; Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; Goldman Sachs and Co., San Francisco, CA; Microsoft, Redmond, WA; Boeing Corp., Chicago, IL; TransAmerica Corporation, San Francisco, CA; Prudential, New York, NY; and Citibank, New York, NY.

Untitled #1
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Untitled #1" is a colors monotype on Arches paper by Dutch artist Frans Horbach. It is hand signed and dated in pencil by the artist. The image (plate mark) is 19.65 x 19.65 inches, sheet size is 35.5 x 24.75 inches. It is in excellent condition, the colors are fresh and bright, has never been framed. About the artist: Born in Holland, Dutch artist Frans Horbach first visited New York when he was 17 years old, traveling on a cargo ship from Rotterdam, just as his fellow country man Willem de Kooning had done years before. Two years later he left Holland and emigrated to California. During the years that he lived and worked as a professional artist in America, one of the main sources of artistic influence came from artists belonging to what is now known as the New York school of American lyrical abstract expressionist art - Rothko, Pollock, De Kooning... He was attracted by their ideas, style of work, and more importantly, by their vital energy and uninhibited self-confidence. Horbach's work also was influenced, more subtely perhaps, by his contact with indigeneous Indian people during his journeys in the American South-West and Mexico. These encounters were a rich source of inspiration - they became integral to a philosophical framework which involved the appreciation of physical space in a poetic and artistic sense. In later years, as the result of his long-time interest in oriental art and philosophy, some of his work show a distinct affinity with the aesthetic sensibilities of traditional Japanse...

III by Kim Lim, 1991 Additional information: Medium: woodcut on paper 36 x 32.5 cm 14 1/8 x 12 3/4 in signed and dated in pencil verso Kim Lim was born in Singapore and spent much of her early childhood in Penang and Malacca. After her schooling in Singapore, Lim knew that she wanted to become an artist, and at eighteen, she enrolled at St. Martin's in London, where she spent two years concentrating mainly on wood carving. She then transferred to the Slade, where taught by the etcher Anthony Gross and lithographer Stanley Jones, she developed a strong commitment to print making. On journeys back to Singapore she stopped off in Europe and India, soaking up the art 'like a sponge'. These were the experiences that confirmed in her a lifelong predilection for things archaic, and for the flow and rhythm of Indian and South East Asian sculpture: " I found that I always responded to things that were done in earlier civilizations that seemed to have less elaboration and more strength." In Greece she was entranced by Cycladic sculpture. Of Chinese art she was moved most by early Shang bronzes, Han sculpture, Sung pottery...
