About the Item
The lion and embroidered ball motif is a timeless emblem in Chinese culture, often seen in traditional lion dances that date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. The lion’s pursuit of the ball symbolizes the quest for wisdom and enlightenment, carrying wishes for good fortune, prosperity, and success. It also reflects courage, vitality, and the harmonious balance of strength and grace that defines festive celebration.
In this work, Hsien Chih Wang reimagines the classic image through exquisite lacquer artistry. Using layered techniques such as takamakie and hiramakie, he combines lacquer, metal powder, and pigments to create a surface rich in depth and brilliance. The dominant hues of red and gold evoke joy, vitality, and auspiciousness, while the intricate floral and geometric patterns lend elegance and refinement. The lion’s flowing mane, rendered in silver and gold, radiates movement and energy, while the ornate ball beneath its claws glows with intricate inlay and shimmering luster.
A master of both tradition and innovation, Hsien Chih Wang continues the legacy of his father, renowned lacquer artist Ching Shuang Wang. Building upon this lineage, he infuses classical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, achieving works that embody harmony, vitality, and poetic symbolism. His art not only celebrates the spirit of Taiwanese lacquer but also introduces it to a global stage with renewed vibrancy and cultural depth.

Divine Dragon, Duanxi Songkeng Inkstone
Located in Taichung, TW
The Divine Dragon Inkstone was carved in 2012 by master craftsman Wei Ming Huang, using stone from Songkeng, one of the four famous Duanxi quarries. Discovered and mined since the Northern Song dynasty, Songkeng stone is known for its dense, smooth texture and distinctive features such as golden star-like specks, “fire spots,” and the prized “coin fire” patterns. With a high mica content, it produces ink of exceptional quality, making it highly valued for carved inkstones.
This piece reveals natural star-like “stone eyes” across the surface, resembling a night sky. A dragon, executed in high and openwork relief, emerges among clouds, evoking the majestic vision of a divine dragon soaring through the heavens. Symbolizing wisdom, power, and auspicious protection, the work harmonizes nature and artistry.
Wei Ming Huang, from Zhaoqing, Guangdong, has devoted over twenty years to Duan inkstone...
