About the Item

This "Untitled Painting About Love", mixed media, by Irma Cavat was part of the Arwin Galleries presentation "Paintings About Love" in Detroit, Michigan in November 1967, at which the artist was in attendance. The work is colorful, impressionistic, and slightly surreal and depicts a figure obscured in a colorful field with a fairy-like quality. The picture inside the frame measures at 34.25 x 25 inches. The frame is beautifully gilted and measures 8.25 x 7 inches. The work is signed "Cavat" in the lower right corner. Irma Cavat was born in Brooklyn in 1928. She studied at the Academy of Allied Arts in New York, the Brooklyn Museum Art School, and the New School for Social Research with Alexander Archipenko and Jose de Creeft. She also modeled for the Surrealist painter Rene Magritte. Among her painting work she also designed the windows for FAO Schwartz and worked with William De Kooning and the early Abstract Expressionists like Jackson Pollack and Larry Rivers. Cavat was a professor of art at the University of California at Santa Barbara from 1965 to 2000. She collaborated with Isabelle Greene and the physicist Walter Kohn on the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation's Sadako Peace Garden to mark the 50th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima.
