About the Item
"Minutiae II" is a fiber collage mixed media fiber collage by Jeanne Smith. The artist begins by dyeing background fabric, in this instance tie-dyeing, which creates an irregular pattern, then cuts shapes from various fabrics, some of which she has hand dyed or applied paint. The layers of fabrics, textures and patterns suggest a quilt but lack the regularity of a quilt's patterning. The work balances the deliberate with the seemingly unplanned. The artist has said that she attempted to create a feeling of floating and suspension as seen by the black rectangles in relation to the blue sea-like ground.

Known for her mixed media free hanging fiber collages, Smith begins each piece by dying the background fabric. She may add visual texture to it by mono printing with fabric paints. Then, she cuts shapes out of various fabrics and pins them to the background. When she is pleased with the composition, she sews the fabric shapes onto the background. She uses fabrics that she has hand dyed to suggest outer space, ocean water and macroscopic views. The feeling of floating and suspension in the hand dyed fabric suggests the spiritual realm to the artist.
