Contemporary collage by Jill Haas.
Haas grew up watching her grandmother and mother paint flowers, acquiring the love of leaf and petal. Her subject matter is informed by the wisdom of the previous generations. The artist collages with swatches of paper that are covered with the loosely painted brush strokes. The washy paint in contrast with the sharp edges of the shapes creates a flatness which references her work as a digital illustrator. Silhouettes play an important role in Haas' compositions. They allow her to repeat her subjects, emphasizing their importance. Often, the silhouettes depict the subject in a different stage of life, referencing the generational tradition of botanical art in her family, and helping her reckon with my own aging.
This piece could be a wonderful present and a valuable addition to any collection.
