Josef Brauner (Aaron Chaimowicz, 1890–1973), Berlin-born Bauhaus-trained artist, created this exceptional black and white rationalist collage in 1927. The composition, executed in paper, ink, and pencil, displays geometric precision and avant-garde clarity, reflecting the rationalist abstraction that defined the Bauhaus aesthetic.
Brauner studied under Wassily Kandinsky, Oskar Schlemmer, and Herbert Bayer at the Bauhaus. Beyond his artistic pursuits, he was a politically engaged antifascist and fought in the Spanish Civil War. His work spans collage, printmaking, and graphic design, with this period recognized as among his most influential.
This hand-signed and dated collage represents a rare surviving example of his interwar Berlin production.
