About the Item
Held Together embodies Lisa Pressman’s long investigation into how memory lives within the body, surface, and time. This sculptural mixed media work is both painting and object—built through layers of wax, pigment, and mark-making that hold traces of gesture like archaeological fragments. Its organic form feels unearthed rather than constructed, evoking the way memories surface, fade, and transform. Pressman’s signature use of translucency and opacity creates a poetic tension between what is revealed and concealed. Unlike traditional wall pieces, this work physically projects into space, blurring boundary and edge, past and present. Intimate yet powerful, it invites close looking and emotional resonance—each layer a reminder that memory is not fixed, but alive, shifting, and deeply human.

Lisa Pressman
Lisa Pressman earned her BA in Art from Douglas College, Rutgers University and an MFA from Bard College. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad, including The Hunderton Art Museum, Clinton, NJ (2014), the Rosenfeld Gallery, Philadelphia, PA (2013); Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery, College of Saint Elizabeth, Morristown, NJ; group shows at SEFA; and Butters Gallery, Portland, OR. Additionally, Pressman’s paintings have been included at The Cape Cod Museum of Art, Dennis, MA; Western Carolina State University Museum, Cullowhee, NC; and at the A Gallery in Provincetown, MA. Pressman’s work is included in many public and private collections. She teaches painting locally and nationally. The artist lives and works in West Orange, NJ.
