This wall-mounted mixed media work by María Magán combines textiles, painting, and woodworking into a surreal, sensorial tableau. Titled Mosca and part of the series Ni antes ni después, the piece presents a theatrical assemblage of symbolic elements: a round painted fly head with a protruding tongue centered on a bold red wooden panel, a white embroidery hoop hanging below, and a richly floral textile stretched across the background support. The construction fuses flatness and volume, narrative and ornament.
The work draws on a dreamlike logic rooted in Magán’s personal rereading of Lewis Carroll’s Alice, navigating between fantasy, delirium, and altered perception. The fly—a grotesque yet strangely tender creature—anchors the viewer in a space where the abject meets the decorative, and where bodily imagery is filtered through the lens of the absurd. Each element resists simple interpretation, functioning as both symbol and prop in a surrealist stage.
Formally, the piece plays with visual hierarchy, scale, and contrast: the vivid red block floats against the floral background, which is both domestic and disorienting. Painted details emerge from the layered composition, prompting viewers to decode the narrative through texture, surface, and spatial tension. Mosca exemplifies Magán’s exploration of the irrational as a site of pleasure and confusion—an invitation to inhabit ambiguity through material excess.

María Magán
(Galicia, Spain) is a multidisciplinary visual artist and PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Vigo. Her practice explores textile art, painting, and installation, using sewing as a creative process that moves between political activism and poetic recreation. Founder of art collectives and cultural spaces such as La doce and LIBA colectivo, Magán combines artistic creation with cultural project management. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Spain and Portugal, including the Hybrid Art Fair (Madrid) and shows at institutions like the Fundación Museo de Artes de Ribeira. Her sensitive and experimental work weaves new material narratives connecting memory, identity, and territory.
