About the Item
Long fascinated with nature’s way of reclaiming what humans build, artist Melissa Furness visually depicts how organic and self-imposed deterioration confuses our sense of reality and cultural memory. Through expressions of narrative, nature, and site as ruin, works like "Lady Lichen 1: After the Sabines" also address concepts of personal growth, change, history, and identity.
This piece is related to her "Manly Moss" series. In addition to oil and acrylic paint, it has dried sheet moss and epoxy on a wood panel. The moss application conceals Melissa's homage to Renaissance/Mannerist art in her beautifully rendered swarming figures.
Melissa Furness received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Iowa. Her work has been most influenced by her travel experiences, which have included artist residencies in Beijing, China; Mexico City; Ireland; Gdansk, Poland; and Hungary, as well as those in the U.S. at Jentel in Wyoming, Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California and Yaddo in upstate New York. These experiences have formed the core of her creative research, with her current strain of work in painting and installation influenced by public histories infused with personal narrative.

We Are The Earth
By Elsa Marie Keefe
Located in Brooklyn, NY
We are the Earth is comprised of a photograph, acrylic paint, found objects in nature (bones, leaves, flowers, stones, crystals) and resin. The base materials for the work consist of a wooden paneled canvas that provides the platform for the adhesion of a rolled photographic canvas, a fine art photography print. The canvas print, in this case a double exposure digital photograph, is adhered to the wood using a clear acrylic varnish. Acrylic Paint is added along with the objects that I found in nature, which are all placed in a careful and meticulous fashion, finally cemented in resin. This specific piece of art was my first large scale piece of its kind, created in my studio in Brooklyn in 2019.
This piece was inspired by the colors of my travels, the deserts, trees, mountains and sunsets. The human depicted is myself, it is a self-portrait captured in Great Sand Dunes...
