About the Item

"Picador" 1966 Experimental Surrealist Composition Intriguing mixed-media piece by prominent California artist Morris Broderson (b. 1928 d. 2011.) A picador sits upon his horse, holding what is likely his lance in his right hand. Next to the picador is another figure, depicted using a crisp watercolor outline and sparse graphite hatching along what might be the figure's robe. The majority of the piece is rendered in grey tones, with the blue of the picador's jacket and the jarring bright orange, yellow, and green scarf on the horse providing color contrast. Details such as the faces of the two figures are soft and delicate. Along the bottom edge of the piece are a variety of pinholes punched by the artist. Overall, these effects create a strange and surreal scene. Signed and dated "66 Broderson" in bottom left corner. Frame size: 20" H x 19" W Mat size: 16.88" H x 15.88" W Image size: 9.25" H x 8.25" W Original gallery tag affixed to verso lists the title as "Picador." Morris Gaylord Broderson was born in Los Angeles, California on November 4, 1928. Broderson was deaf from birth and attended the Berkeley School for the Deaf in Berkeley, California. While in attendance, he gained an interest in art and began teaching himself to draw. This caught the attention of his aunt, Joan Ankrum, owner of the Ankrum Gallery in Los Angeles, when he was fourteen. His aunt recognized his talent and helped him to gain a scholarship to the Pasadena Art Institute. While studying there, Francis DeErdeley, the director of the institute and a professor at the University of Southern California, convinced Broderson to leave his high school education early and attend the University of South California. While at USC, Broderson focused solely on drawing. Following his graduation, he worked as a janitor at a local racetrack and as a photographer’s assistant to support himself. His first solo show was held in Laguna Beach and following this he began showing around Los Angeles, including at his aunt’s Ankrum Gallery. His art covers a range of subjects from realistic still lives to surreal figures and allegorical paintings which tackle topics such as the crucifixion. He worked in a variety of media, such as oil paints, pastels, watercolors, and graphite. During his career, he was a recipient of the New Talent USA prize from Art in America, the First Prize and Purchase from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His work has been exhibited at institutions such as the De Young Museum in San Francisco and is now held in numerous collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hirshorn Museum, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the SFMOMA, and the Museum of Fine arts in Boston.
