About the Item

This circular acrylic portrait belongs to the artist’s Currency series, a project that reframes the visual structure of coins to explore questions of identity, migration and symbolic worth. Painted on a 26 cm wooden disc, the piece presents the profile of a woman in desaturated green tones set against a vibrant fuchsia background. Small circular interventions animate the face with subtle relief, while the headscarf and earring details introduce references to diasporic aesthetics and urban cultural codes. Encircling the portrait, the French inscription “Tout ce que j’ai vécu doit compter pour quelque chose” (“Everything I have lived through must count for something”) acts as a declaration of dignity and accumulated experience. Rather than commemorating national figures—as traditional coins do—the Currency series elevates anonymous faces whose histories are usually absent from official iconography. Each piece becomes a counter-monument, underscoring how value is assigned, withheld or negotiated within social systems. The chromatic intensity of this panel, paired with the sober expression of the figure, emphasizes the tension between the quiet resilience of lived experience and the external frameworks that attempt to define it. The work is hand-painted on treated pine wood, with a depth of 2 cm, and can be displayed independently or combined with other circular pieces from the series to form expanded wall constellations. Its sculptural presence and compact scale make it highly adaptable to both intimate interiors and larger installations. Custom commissions are available for collectors interested in assembling multi-panel configurations tailored to architectural space. A defining aspect of this project is its conceptual economy: the artist grants collectors the possibility of exchanging, in future acquisitions, the percentage of the sale price that would normally constitute her fee. Each artwork therefore acquires a double condition—both as an original painting and as a transferable token—inviting reflection on authorship, labor and the mechanisms through which artistic value is produced.
