About the Item

This circular hand-painted panel forms part of the artist’s ongoing Currency series, a project that reimagines the form and symbolism of coins to address migration, belonging and the instability of value. Set against a vivid orange ground, the profile of an anonymous individual appears in deep red and violet tones, enhanced by small metallic elements that add sculptural relief to the surface. Encircling the portrait, the Hungarian phrase “Legrosszabb már elmúlt” (“The worst is over”) introduces a message of endurance and recovery—an affirmation shared across many migrant experiences. Rather than depicting rulers or national leaders, as traditional currency typically does, the series presents unfamiliar and uncelebrated faces, foregrounding those whose identities remain outside official narratives. The circular format reinforces the visual language of coins while subverting its symbolic hierarchy, suggesting that personal histories, cultural displacement and lived resilience hold their own forms of worth. Painted on a 26 cm wooden disc with a depth of 2 cm, the work combines expressive color with subtle three-dimensional interventions, resulting in an object that lies between painting, relief and conceptual artifact. Multiple pieces from the Currency series can be installed together to create modular arrangements—linear sequences, grids or irregular clusters—depending on the architectural space and the collector’s preference. Custom commissions are also available for larger, tailored installations. A distinctive aspect of this project is the artist’s proposal of a transferable value system: collectors may redeem, in future acquisitions, the portion of the sale price that would typically correspond to the artist’s fee. In this sense, each artwork acts as an alternative form of exchange, challenging conventional notions of price, authorship and symbolic capital. Distorted Green Portrait with Erased Inscription. "Currency #230"
By Natasha Lelenco
Located in FISTERRA, ES
This circular green-toned portrait explores themes of exclusion, invisibility, and erasure within identity discourse. The facial features appear blurred, almost erased, dissolving into an ambiguous presence that resists clear representation. This visual distortion is mirrored by the inscription itself—scratched, overwritten, and rendered unreadable. The deliberate removal of legibility evokes the frustration of miscommunication and the social marginalization of those whose narratives remain silenced. About the Series Part of Natasha Lelenco’s Currencies...
