About the Item
For some ancient civilizations, gold was the spiritual link between the earthly and the divine. In Egyptian obelisks, the upper
part, called the pyramidion, was covered in gold, with the intention that Ra, the god of the sun and life, would manifest himself
through the reflection of the sun's rays.
Obelisks were usually carved with the name of the king who had ordered them to be built, the deity to whom they were
dedicated, and some historical or political event in commemoration of which they had been erected. This concept changed
when the Romans took control of Egypt and the obelisks were expropriated from their original locations and scattered
throughout the Roman Empire; the purpose of these monuments was nullified by geographical, political, and historical
displacement.
What color are the gods? explores the problem of the representation of the golden color, its symbolic connotations, its
political implications, and its spatial configurations. The rooftops photographed belong to politically and economically active
areas of Tokyo, where capital is the driving force behind the construction of the urban landscape.
Taking the symbolism of the obelisk, this series seeks to destabilize the notion of landscape as contemplation, questioning its
very configuration through the intervention of pyramidions covered in gold leaf. The interventions respond to origami folds that
unfold the architecture in a vertical space, reflecting imperialism as the highest stage of capitalism.
