About the Item

Richard Anuszkiewicz Op Art Bowl for Hirshhorn Museum, 1976 Glazed Enamel on Metal Bowl. Artists Signature Fired in Plate Anuszkiewicz' signature fired onto the underside of bowl Limited Edition (exact number undisclosed) 8 3/4 in diameter This stunning mid century bowl by Op Art pioneer Richard Anuszkiewicz (protege of Josef Albers) was produced by the Hirshhorn Museum in 1976 in a very limited quantity, and sold out almost immediately. Today, nearly half a century on, these bowls, with the bright orange designed exterior and robin blue interior, are desirable and stunning collectors' items - true design objects for any home. We do see these works occasionally come to market; but nearly every other example we have ever seen has some sort of defect - perhaps because people used these bowls after purchasing them, or simply because they are nearly half a century old. This is one of the few examples we've seen that is in such good condition. Manufacturer: Created by Richard Anuszkiewicz for the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C. About Richard Anuszkiewicz: Richard Anuszkiewicz (1930-2020) is one of the masters of color in modern American art. His oeuvre has developed and evolved over a sixty-year period, but at the root of his approach certain key principles remain, most vitally the capacity of the eye to 'mix' complementary colors presented separately on the canvas. After training with the great Bauhaus artist and teacher Josef Albers at Yale, Anuszkiewicz carried the legacies of geometrical abstraction and tonal harmony a step further than his mentor by experimenting with an unprecedented range of color contrasts. The works he was creating by the early 1960s seemed to bring pigment alive on the canvas, making it vibrate, hum, or float in front of the picture surface. Combining these qualities with the illusory, architectonic and trompe-l'oeil effects of Op Art - a movement Anuszkiewicz helped to define and which, in its suggestion of visual movement, was an offshoot of Kinetic Art - generated a body of work which at once sat within various traditions and had a warmth and spiritual energy entirely its own.

Bowl by Per Hammarström, Signed, Sweden, 1980s / 1990s
By Per Hammarström
Located in Stockholm, SE
Bowl by Per Hammarström, Sweden, 1980s / 1990s. Stoneware. Signed “Per.H” Measurements: H: 17.9 cm / 7" W: 25.3 cm / 10". Per Hammarström is one of Sweden’s most highly regarded ceramicists. Per’s work doesn’t conform to the Swedish style of simplicity; instead he loves colour and texture, and exploring the multi-faceted function of ceramics. Per began his training at the Gustavsbergs Porcelain Studio in 1978, which is sadly no longer in existence. In 1984 he opened his own studio in Strängnäs, and has worked in this manner ever since. Per’s work is characterised by organic forms and his own distinctive glazes, often in bright colours and strong contrasts. His work is unique, each piece starting out as a roughly thrown form, which is worked and transformed into bowls that are characterised by their delicacy and translucency. The organic form is embodied in the textured ceramics of Per. His works are either made from stoneware or porcelain. The inspiration of much of his work is the sea, but he also draws from flora and fauna; and the changing of the seasons. The undulating colours of the sea, sky and land manifest themselves in his delicately crafted and vividly coloured ceramics. Through elaborate dining-ware and ceramic ornaments...
