About the Item
This work is part of Taly Cohen’s Janelas (Windows) series, a body of work born during the isolation of the pandemic in April 2020. Confined to her apartment in São Paulo, Cohen began creating directly in her own window—using the building’s protective netting as a surface—transforming a space of separation into one of expression and agency.
At a moment when fear and death dominated daily life, the window became an act of resistance. Through abstraction, Cohen explored the dialogue between inside and outside, intimacy and exposure, fragility and structure. What began as an ephemeral urban intervention evolved into a lasting sculptural language.
These works translate that original installation into hand-constructed textile sculptures, built on wooden frames and composed of polyethylene mesh, satin ribbons, grosgrain, cotton, and lace. The materials are intentionally contrasted—industrial and domestic, rigid and soft—mirroring the tension between vulnerability and resilience that defines the series.
In later works from Janelas, Cohen expands the narrative further, incorporating stories of people often rendered invisible by society, particularly refugee women. In this way, each “window” becomes not only personal but collective—a space for empathy, visibility, and connection.
Why it’s worth the price:
This is not decorative textile art. It is a conceptually rigorous, labor-intensive work that sits at the intersection of sculpture, painting, and architecture. Each piece is meticulously constructed, structurally sound, and visually powerful at scale. As part of a historically grounded and emotionally resonant series, it carries both artistic and cultural weight—designed to endure, to be lived with, and to remain relevant long after the moment that inspired it.
In short: this is a work about survival, dignity, and seeing—quietly powerful, deeply human, and unmistakably Taly Cohen.
