Nell'Italia della prima metà del Novecento c'è un luogo che diventa la culla di fecondi artisti, pittori, grafici, scultori, architetti e designer, che faranno la storia dell'arte italiana del Novecento. Parliamo della città di Pistoia, a venti chilometri dalla maestosa e invadente Firenze, la città che negli anni '60 diventerà la sede della Poltronova, che diventerà un'icona del design moderno. Ma prima di Poltronova Pistoia è la città di Giovanni Michelucci, di Marino Marini, Agenore Fabbri, Sigfrido Bartolini, Mario Nigro e il folto gruppo degli avanguardisti e dei pittori pistoiesi del Novecento, un unicum straordinario nel panorama artistico contemporaneo . Di questo gruppo fa parte anche il meno conosciuto, ma non per questo meno capace, Mario Toccangini. Nato e cresciuto in questo ambiente di avanguardisti, ispirato dalla visione di un mondo popolare, si sofferma a ritrarre le donne, interpretate secondo un gusto ancora orientato verso l'espressionismo astratto. Questo "Ritratto di ragazza", eseguito a tecnica mista, ce lo conferma, così come ci conferma le sue grandi capacità.
Il dipinto ha la sua cornice originale ed è stato incorniciato, come conferma l'etichetta apposta dietro, presso la galleria Morandi di Pistoia, in quel tempo vivace luogo di incontro degli artisti pistoiesi. Sempre dietro c'è l'autentica manoscritta dal pittore.
