About the Item
Toufan Hosseiny (b. 1988, La Louvière, Belgium) is a Belgian-Iranian artist based in London and Brussels whose work explores the connection between body, mind, and materiality through textile-based compositions. Her practice is deeply rooted in meditation, both as a concept and a method, shaping works that balance structure and instinct, precision and fluidity.
Hosseiny’s process begins with meditative drawings, where she allows instinct to guide her hand. These gestures are then transposed onto linen, where embroidery and weaving techniques transform them into intricate textile compositions. In her Clouds series, for example, she creates translucent, floating forms that capture and diffuse light, evoking the impermanence of thought and experience. By layering threads and textures, she reveals a tension between visibility and invisibility, presence and absence, solidity and air.
Her practice extends beyond personal introspection, engaging with broader themes of separation and reconciliation—between physical and psychological states, between perception and reality. In her 2022 solo exhibition Uncontrolled Bodies at Galerie Baronian, Hosseiny transformed the space into a white, liminal environment where her Clouds hovered, creating a dialogue between movement, stillness, and sensory experience.
By embracing slowness, repetition, and material sensitivity, her work invites viewers into a contemplative space, offering a poetic meditation on the fragile yet enduring nature of being.
