About the Item

This Edo-period drum box features a black lacquer ground decorated with gold maki-e. A majestic phoenix spreads its wings across the lid, its long tail flowing in elegant arcs while each feather is rendered with refined detail and subtle shading. Surrounding paulownia leaves are outlined with delicate lines and warm tones, creating a graceful balance between movement and stillness. The gold design stands out beautifully against the dark lacquer surface, and the green and violet cords add a touch of harmony and sophistication. The interior fabric lining remains clean and well-preserved, reflecting the care given to its craftsmanship. The set includes its original hand drum, though the drum skin requires replacement. As an Edo-period piece, the lacquer box has some visible signs of age and use, including a slightly matte abrasion on one side. Collectors are advised to review its condition carefully before purchase.
