About the Item

This pair of chair drapes, dating from the late Qing to early Republican period (19th–early 20th century), was created in a professional embroidery workshop that catered to the homes of aristocrats and wealthy families. Such workshops not only produced exquisite garments but also crafted luxurious home textiles. Chair drapes were decorative covers for formal hall chairs, often paired with table skirts, serving both as elegant furnishings and as protection for the furniture. Each piece in this pair features a different auspicious motif: one with a crane and the other with a pheasant. The crane, a timeless Chinese emblem of longevity and refined grace, conveys wishes for long life and enduring elegance. The pheasant, with its brilliant plumage, symbolizes good fortune and harmony. Lush peonies, representing wealth and prosperity, blossom across a vivid red ground. The fine silk threads create subtle shading in the petals and a shimmering texture in the birds’ feathers. Even after more than a century, the colors remain remarkably bright and festive. Together, these chair drapes preserve the artistry of late-imperial embroidery and reflect the opulent domestic aesthetics of their time. As a Qing Dynasty piece, minor signs of use remain and are shown in the photographs for careful consideration. Sold as pairs Dimension: H 135 x W 51 cm / H 20 × W 26.6 in (each)

Swan Lake, Chinese Silk Embroidery Painting
Located in Taichung, TW
Yinghua Zhou’s Swan Lake captures the graceful moment of a swan splashing across the water with extraordinary skill in Suzhou Embroidery. Recognized as one of China’s four great embroidery traditions, Suzhou Embroidery is admired for its flat, neat, harmonious, lustrous, smooth, and even qualities. This work reflects all of these traits. The stitches are impeccably even, the colors flow naturally from shade to shade, and the lines shine with a gentle radiance. Seen from afar, the composition has the depth and refinement of a fine oil painting. Up close, every feather reveals itself as countless silk threads patiently layered to create a soft, luminous glow. Although Swan Lake is a Suzhou Embroidery, Zhou has woven into it the precision and delicacy for which she is renowned in Hair Embroidery...
