William A. Noguera has spent almost 30 years on death row; he lives alone in a cinderblock cell in San Quentin Prison, California. Yet against that backdrop, Noguera has become an internationally recognized artist, known for his hyper-realistic compositions, abstract paintings and collage work that have exhibited in Paris, San Francisco, New York and London. The landscape of Noguera's confinement has been an inevitable influence on his work; many of his recent pieces divide the canvas into geometric shapes, representing the angular lines of his confinement. “If you look at my work carefully you see that everything is compartmentalized,” the artist says. “As a prisoner, every aspect of my life is compartmentalized. When I go to the shower I’m locked into a small cage – a geometric square. When I return to my cell it’s the same thing. When I walk down the tiers I’m enclosed in compartments. So I am painting the landscape of my confinement.” During his first days on death row, Noguera resurrected his passion for art as a child and used creating as a mode of processing and surviving. Using scavenged pencils, he drew a mural on the wall of his cell. He began to draw on other items, and eventually was given paper to work with by guards who were surprised by his talent. The sensitivity with which Noguera writes about his art and emotional state is stands in contrast to his descriptions of the darkness ever-present in his environment, revealing an inherent juxtaposition within much of his work. This piece, Untitled- Max Opus, June 25, 2018, commemorates the time and place that Noguera created it, a visual memory akin to a diary entry in the long string of his narrative as a man. He grinds rocks and concrete from the San Quentin Yard, then mixes it the fine grit into his gesso to create a surface upon which to paint. Noguera is literally breaking down the walls that confine him as he creates these works - then he imagines sending those walls out into the world, slowly loosening himself from the prison borders. He then paints in fluid style around a landscape he has mapped out based upon his day to day reality. The contrasting elements within this composition are the precise geometric shapes/patterns, juxtaposed against the fluid, multi dimensional background. The use of black reflects the dark, negative and even perpetual nature of confinement, while the ebb and flow of the blues and greens in the background are a reminder of peace and calm. These elements are a visual and metaphoric expression of the duality of life, which is the reality we all face, but with particular resonance for Noguera.
