About the Item

Arnolds Vilis NAIKA (1908.24.11 in Riga-1991.3III in Riga, buried in Meža Cemetery) metal artist. He learned the craft and then worked in the workshop of the goldsmith H. Meiers "Rutkovskis and Meiers" (1925-36). 1931-40 teacher at the Riga State School of Arts and Crafts (then still courses) in the metal artistic decoration department. Along with working in the leather artistic decoration department under V. Zosta, he learned composition and drawing. Due to his work on the Freedom Monument, Naika (together with J. Zibeni) in 1935, as a state scholarship holder, was sent to Stockholm to the artist R. Mirsmēdens to improve his figurative metalwork. He forged the upper and right-hand star of the Freedom Monument. Participated in exhibitions since 1932. Member of the Artists' Union since 1957. After World War II, worked in the artel "Rīgas gravieris" as a jeweler (until 1955). From 1957, worked at the combine "Māksla", also as the chief artist. Was a consultant in various art councils. From 1969, public dean of the People's University of Printing. In 1972, founded the metal art studio "Cilnis" (given the name of the People's Applied Art Studio in 1979); long-time artistic director of the studio (1972-91). Made decorative plates, wall decorations, boxes and jewelry - necklaces, brooches, pins, as well as sketches and objects for the interior (candlesticks for the hall of the Writing Palace in Sigulda and a presidium table standard, 1937). Naika had mastered various metalworking techniques, but used mainly forging and chiseling. He implemented his ideas by processing various materials - silver, copper, brass, cupronickel, amber, semi-precious stones, sometimes decorating wooden and leather objects with them. In his work, he firmly relied on the traditions of folk art and ornament. The most significant works: decorative plate (copper, 1932), decorative plate (silver, 1942), necklace (1970), brooch (1976). The works are in the Museum of Decorative Applied Art, the collection of the Latvian Artists' Union and private collections. L.Jēkabsone Art and Architecture in Biographies, vol. 2, R.: Latvian Encyclopedia, 1996, pp. 139, 140.
