About the Item

The Mid-Century Modern red vase by Dante Baldelli is an elegant example of the work his studio could produce for the consumer to enhance the décor of their home. By itself it is a stunning piece with an elongated base and a small bowl shape at the top. This could be used as a single flower vase, a candle holder or set out to be admired as its own piece of sculpture. The dark red glaze with black strip is bold, but not garish and lends a dash of color to any setting. This is a unique and rare piece. It is signed on the bottom. Baldelli ceramics have been made by Ceramiche Baldelli in Città di Castello, near Perugia, Italy, since 1943 until his death in 1953 at which time the Baldelli family have carried on the ceramic process for four generations. Ceramist Dante Baldelli (1904-1953), a ceramist working since the 1920s, who became the director of Ceramica Rometti di Umbertide, opened his own workshop in 1943, in piazza Gioberti, Città di Castello, accompanied by his brother Angelo and gradually assisted by his oldest son Massimo, who was eight at the time but who took over the business at the unexpected death of his father in 1953, aged eighteen; under his leadership, production was being sold in US department stores from the 1970s. During the 1980s, Massimo Baldelli's daughter Simona and her husband Lorenzo Colacicchi joined the family business. In the early 1990s the Baldelli studio re-sited to the country outside Città di Castello.

Located in Detroit, MI
"Blown Glass" vase is a light beautiful wisp of blown glass infused with a milky white and blue fog of color and bold splashes of red. The vase has a long elegant neck and round body. Herb Babcock known as a Michigan Glass Artist began as a metal sculptor. He studied glass blowing in 1969 and created a series of Glass Image Vessels in 1974. Eventually he began to combine metal and glass in sculpture. The Pillared Series, which includes glass, steel and stone, began in 1989. Herb received both his BFA and his MFA in Sculpture: his bachelor’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art and his master’s from the Cranbrook Academy of Art Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Cranbrook was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design.
