About the Item

Polychrome wax relief on chalkboard, 20 x 15 cm; with ebony and tortoiseshell frame, 28 x 23 cm The scene depicts Mary Magdalene in the center, seated on a rock with a handkerchief in her hand, looking up to heaven. On the lower right, an angel holds up the urn with ointments (one of the saint's attributes), from behind a rock, on the upper left, appears another angel with a skull (memento mori related to the theme of vanitas), a book (a symbol of meditation) and a pearl necklace while another, paraded, lies at her feet (a symbol of both purity and the abandonment of luxurious living). This depiction is directly inspired by a model by Bartolomeo Schedoni (Modena 1578 - Parma 1661), a specimen of which is mentioned as being preserved at the Minneapolis Institute of Art [...] belongs to the hand of Giovan Francesco Pieri, a Tuscan artist and pupil of the sculptor Gioacchino Fortini, active first in the Florence of the last Medici court and then in the Naples of the Bourbons. Pieri, considered the greatest waxworker of his time, repeatedly translated into wax paintings by artists of the past, especially Schedoni, and his works, especially portraits, were in great demand. This version of his Penitent Mary Magdalene was also very successful, and several examples are known to be more or less similar in detail (such as the tree in the background or the grasses among the rocks) and size, including one also preserved in the Neapolitan city that bears an inscription on the back that helps us with the dating, namely 1749.
