"The painting symbolizes love," says artist Hilary Gomes. She captures two delicate pink roses from a visit to the Filoli Gardens in California. Starting with a raw umber underpainting, she then completed the piece with an indirect oil painting method and finished with a varnish coat. This unframed piece is on an acid-free archival Deluxe Professional oil-primed Linen Centurion medium-weight textured linen panel that is cleanly wrapped and adhered to a solid 3mm MDF wood board.
About the Artist
Artist Hilary Gomes paints small-scale classical garden compositions with a focus on roses. “Painting roses is a metaphor for love. I aim to convey the poetic spiritual beauty and grace of nature,†says Hilary. As a native to the California Bay Area, she began her journey in drawing and painting attending the Ruth Aswawa School of the Arts High School in San Francisco, CA. She then earned her B.F.A. from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Art and Science in New York City. While in New York, a defining moment for her art inspiration came from viewing Henri Fantin-Latour's paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She continued her passion for art and received her MFA in Painting from The University of Iowa. She stays active as a practicing painter and professor, stating that teaching informs her art practice. She has been a full-time tenured female faculty at Foothill College in Los Altos, CA from 2001 to the present and chairs the department of art. Hilary teaches oil and watercolor painting, color and design, and life drawing. Hilary's art studio is on the first floor of her home looking out into her garden. “My clean and environmentally solvent-free studio is filled with light, house plants, a large standing easel, and a small table easel. I also paint outdoors in my backyard with the sounds of nature and fresh air.â€

I really love still life. Nothing helps me grow more as an artist than painting still life. It sits for one so patiently as you strive to capture it's image on your canvas. But it challenges me also. It's not easy to keep it from looking static and void of life. I think I was able to give this one some of the energy of light and color that it was patiently showing to me. A juicy harmony of fruit and flowers and deep cobalt blue glass...
