This painting was based on a plein air painted I did on location at Kill Devil Hills in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The beach is a great place to people watch, and if you are an artist, to study the human figure. The smaller plein air painting was a slightly simpler, fresh and lively in the moment composition. Back home in the studio, I endeavored to retain that liveliness, while expanding on the scene and the figures within.
About the Artist
Jennifer’s early work focused mostly on the human figure, though she eventually gravitated toward landscape painting after studying the Impressionist masters. She enjoys gathering her own reference material in the field, both through plein air painting and sketching as well as taking photographs. “From my field studies, I gain an understanding of the light and a visceral feeling of time and place,” says Jennifer. “All of my paintings are places I have visited myself and explored in depth.” When she’s not painting, Jennifer enjoys gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family.

This painting was inspired by the view from my hotel balcony in Paris of the pedestrian below me, trying to button his coat as he walked against the wind. I created the movement of the walking figure in expressive brushstrokes that emulate pixelation and motion. I use the unique aerial perspective to turn the human figure into a more abstract shape and to emphasize the movement of the figure.
About the Artist
Warren Keating's paintings start with documentation. He captures subjects on video from birds-eye views, digitizes the film on his computer and, finally, paints them on canvas in an active style he describes as Pixel Impressionism. He merges artistic elements of the 20th Century with 21st Century technology. Warren credits Futurism as well as Richard Diebenkorn and Willem de Kooning as influences in his paintings. Fun fact: Warren’s inspiration for this series came from a vacation to Paris where he photographed passersby from his hotel balcony in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
