About the Item

Sublime vase by Jos Kervella is a French ceramist from Saint-Urbain, near Daoulas (Finistère). Gifted for the arts from childhood, he studied at the Lycée de Brest, where his talents were noticed, before continuing his training at the Beaux-Arts de Brest, the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, and the Arts Décoratifs de Paris between 1934 and 1938. To finance his studies, Kervella worked during his vacations with the Henriot earthenware factory in Quimper, where he learned modeling and produced his first earthenware heads. The Henriot Quimper earthenware factory is one of the oldest in France. Its origins date back to 1690, when Jean-Baptiste Bousquet, a potter from southern France, settled in Quimper and founded a ceramics workshop. Located in Brittany, the town of Quimper quickly became a major center for hand-made earthenware.
