About the Item

Exceptionally rare and early mirror by celebrated French ceramicist Mithé Espelt, dating from around 1948. This striking piece, handmade in stamped and glazed earthenware with fire-gilded details, is one of the artist’s very first known models: never commercialized and produced entirely by Espelt herself in the years following World War II. The radiating sun motif, with its rhythmic alternation of flamed rays and golden contours, anticipates the signature visual vocabulary that would define Espelt’s work in the decades to come. A pioneering female figure in mid-century decorative arts, Espelt developed a uniquely poetic ceramic language, blending shimmering glazes, precious materials, and symbolic form. With its rare scale, vibrant yellow palette, and rich surface texture, this mirror is both a design object and a historical document. Mounted on the wall, it catches the light with subtle brilliance, bringing warmth, character, and a touch of 20th-century French artistry to any interior.
