This intimate watercolor captures Fallen Leaf Lake, a serene alpine lake in El Dorado County, California, situated just south of Lake Tahoe—an area celebrated each autumn for the Kokanee Salmon trail runs. Latimer invites the viewer onto a rocky slope, framed by stately evergreens, guiding the gaze across the lake’s glassy blue surface toward the snow-capped Sierra Nevada peaks beyond. Lorenzo Palmer Latimer (1857–1941) was a foundational figure in early 20th-century California plein air painting, especially known for his evocative watercolors of Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Nevada, and Northern California landscapes. He taught at the San Francisco Mechanics’ Institute and later founded the Latimer Art Club in Reno (1921), shaping an entire generation of regional artists. A treasure from a proud congregation. It is a hand-carved wooden sculpture showing the Tablets of the Law flanked by two Lions of Judah. Their paws held the tablets. Their roaring mouths faced outward, protecting the commandments from threats. In a foliage design with gold and silver paint.
Circa 1920-1940's. This Neoclassical, Judaic, Art Deco, Egyptian revival, Shul, Aron Kodesh hand carving, wood with gilding, Hebrew lettering ten commandments sign sculpture, was produced probably in New York.
There was a show at the Folk Art Museum titled “Gilded Lions and Jeweled Horses: The Synagogue to the Carousel” That featured these antique magnificent pieces. From gilded lions to high-stepping horses, the sacred to the secular, and the Old World to the New, “Gilded Lions and Jeweled Horses: The Synagogue to the Carousel” traces the journey of Jewish woodcarvers and other artisans from Eastern and Central Europe to America and the unsung role they played in establishing a distinct Jewish culture in communities throughout the United States. The exuberant artworks stand as a testament to a history of survival and transformation and provide a surprising revelation of the link that was forged between the synagogue and the carousel as immigrant Jewish artists transferred symbolic visual elements into this vernacular American idiom. The first major study of this important aspect of the Jewish contribution to American folk art, the exhibition features approximately one hundred artworks and objects, including rare documentary photographs of Eastern European synagogue arks and carved gravestones, sacred carvings, papercuts, and carousel animals. Some of these same Jewish European carvers worked on Coney Island amusement park rides and carousel horses and other carnival and circus carvings.

Early Twentieth Century Aviation Vintage Aircraft Airplane Framed Gouache Painting of Imperial Airways Hannibal. One of a set of three that were painted by the well known Artist and Illustrator Charles Thomas Howard. Each was painted to be published as postcards so these are the original artworks. They are in good clean condition with fresh and vibrant colours I have had them framed in handmade gold frames with a flecked cream mount.
Can be sold individually or as a set, they look really striking displayed together.

Charles Thomas Howard was born in Boston, Lincolnshire in 1865 and after he married in 1905 moved to London where he pursued his career as Painter and Illustrator. He did many works that were produced as postcards as these three all were. He worked for at least three publishers and was incredibly highly sought after. His work was diverse but he specialised in Aviation, Railways and Military subjects.
His work is held in many Art Libraries including the Bridgeman and as postcards have been reprinted many times over the years and still resonate with todays audiences.
He died at the age of 76 in West Sussex.
