About the Item
“My current work often features ordinary creatures, like the many illustrations of birds and flowers I painted for the Homes and Gardens and other sections during the 25 years I was staff artist for The Oregonian, but now I paint them the way I imagine they might look in an alternate world.
I am always curious and find interpretation exciting, first in the creation and again when I share my vision with you. My paintings usually evolve over time to the point that even I can’t know what direction they will take in the end. It is this journey — the experimental component of my work — that is the most rewarding, as I feel my way through the imperfections and settle on what to leave and what to alter. I’ve developed a technique that includes using acrylic paint marbling with my watercolor paintings. By combining layers of marbled patterning and color I begin to achieve a feeling of movement that allows my subjects to come alive. While my paintings tell a story, I try to leave enough ambiguity for you to invent the narrative.”
2021 is a year for successes.
Rene’s book, “The Art Of Paint Marbling”, published by Walter Foster, will be on the shelves in March. Previously a hundred of her paintings were published in the book, “Plant This” by NPR correspondent Ketzel Levine.
Her painting, “Metamorphosis” is her third consecutive acceptance in the American Watercolor Society’s annual show this April, and with that she has earned signature membership in this prestigious group.
Rene paints in her classroom studio, set in the Tualatin Mountains near Portland. Her colorful watercolor work is often woven with acrylic patterning or texture while unique marbled or stamped papers are transformed as exquisite collaged creatures. These expressive paintings, interlaced with deeper symbolic meaning, invite the viewer to construct their own narrative.
Teaching locally and leading painting workshops in exotic locations such as Tuscany, Croatia and Costa Rica, René encourages each person’s unique artistic expression, creating a safe, supportive environment for growth and experimentation.

Carlos J. Tirado (born on April 3, 1964 in Caracas, Venezuela) is an artist, painter and sculptor who has developed a very personal and precise line of work linked to Neo-Pop art. With plenty of personal art exhibitions, Tirado has participated in numerous collective exhibitions, receiving different awards such as “III Premio de Escultura” del Certamen Aires de Córdoba in 2004 and other recognitions, among them, at the Venezuelan Embassy in DC (2005), and the X Latin Art Festival of Atlanta (2005).
Childhood
Tirado grew up in an upper-middle-class family environment. His inclination for the arts started from an early age. At 8 years old, he was already experimenting with tridimensional forms, creating molds out of cast lead from pieces previously gathered on the streets. These first artistic experiences led by his inquisitive nature, provided the ground to continue exploring the possibilities with different materials like wood, waste and plaster. His childhood games were centered around painting and sculpting, which played an important role that ranged from recreational to aesthetics.
When Tirado turned 12 years of age, his parents agreed for him to attend private art classes with professor Javier Hernandez in Caracas. Later on, he realized that Art was a profession that required investment in materials, reason that led him to work at a furniture store painting landscapes and figurative art to decorate the exhibit room. He created numerous paintings of Caracas’ famous mountain: El Avila...

Influenced by artists of such varying styles as Caravaggio, Rembrandt, De Kooning and Jack Levine, as well as many of the German Neo-Expressionists*, Dan Howard's work often blurs the line between representational* and abstract art*. His experimentation with different canvas preparations, his use of intense colors and his expressive brush strokes have created a myriad of visual combinations in his characteristic larger-sized oil paintings. The result is an emphasis on audience participation and the role of individual interpretation. "I want to make the viewer part of the process. That makes for a richer experience," Howard says.
Throughout his career, Howard has been both a dedicated art teacher-administrator and a gifted professional artist. He chaired the departments of art at Arkansas State University, Kansas State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Howard has received 100 prizes, awards and honors including the top awards in the three longest running national open painting competitions: Society of Four Arts, Palm Beach, Fla.; Butler Institute, Youngstown, Ohio; and Chautauqua Institution, New York.
The Omaha World-Herald has acknowledged Howard as "Nebraska's leading award-winning artist." His work is a part of more than 600 public, private and corporate collections including Hallmark Cards, West Law Publishing, United Airlines, Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing (3M), Holiday Inn...
