About the Item
Woven wool tapestry
Burnt Sienna, after Robert Motherwell is a tapestry in colors, woven with the artist's initials, from the proposed edition of 20. Published by Charles Slatkin, NY. Robert Motherwell, alongside Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning, made up the quartet of American abstract painters that radically defined Modern painting and established New York City as the center of the art world for the second half of the 20th century. He was the unofficial spokesman of the New York School, writing and lecturing prolifically on behalf of the movement, his fellow artists, and the merits of abstraction. (Before devoting himself to painting, Motherwell had started a PhD at Harvard in philosophy. In addition to his talents as an artist, he was incredibly articulate.) Motherwell is particularly noted for his work as a printmaker. He eagerly explored different printing methods as a way to articulate his distinctive aesthetic. Not surprisingly Motherwell also created several tapestries in the early 1970's. We can deduce that his exploration of fibre arts can be attributed to Gloria F. Ross (his first wife - Helen Frankenthaller's sister) the noted tapestry designer. Tapestries are simultaneously among the most ancient and the most modern of art forms. The word "tapestry" once referred exclusively to the rich fabrics that adorned castles and palaces in the Middle Ages. Now, the term is just as likely to connote modern master weavings byartists from Chagall and Dali to Calder and Motherwell that adorn board rooms and private homes alike. In Aubusson, France, where tapestries have been made since the Middle Ages, ateliers developed modern tapestries with the great artists of the 20th century. Translating paint into wool, as she put it, Ms. Gloria Ross worked with Robert Motherwell, Louise Nevelson, Jean Dubuffet, Frank Stella, Jack Youngerman, Romare Bearden and more than two dozen other artists to make tapestries of their paintings. The actual weaving was done by professionals in Felletin, a small French town near Aubusson, and at the Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh, although Ms. Ross played a hands-on role in the process. In 1997, she founded the Gloria F. Ross Center for Tapestry Studies in Tucson, Ariz., a nonprofit research institute and educational foundation that grew from her belief in tapestry as ''a vital contemporary art form with rich historical connections.
