About the Item

Shepard Fairey Liberté Égalité Fraternité, 2015 – 2021 Signed offset lithograph on paper Description Originally created in response to the 2015 Paris attacks, Shepard Fairey’s Liberté Égalité Fraternité transforms the French national motto into a universal emblem of resilience and solidarity. The composition fuses Fairey’s graphic precision with his activist message — a female figure radiating calm strength amid laurel motifs and bold geometry, rendered in the artist’s signature red, black, and cream palette. Details Medium: Offset lithograph on fine art paper, signed by the artist Dimensions: Approx. 24 × 36 in (61 × 91 cm) Edition: Hand-signed; open edition produced by Obey Giant / Studio Number One Publisher: Obey Giant / Shepard Fairey Studio Year: First edition 2015; subsequent printings 2021 Artistic Process Character This particular impression shows subtle smudging and pull marks from the silkscreen stage of production (Please see pictured TE of Fraternite) — traces of ink and pressure that testify to the work’s manual creation. Rather than flaws, these nuances are the hallmarks of a hand-pulled print, each impression bearing its own rhythm and energy. The tactile irregularities animate what might otherwise be a uniform offset piece, transforming it into an object with presence and authenticity. Shepard Fairey (b. 1970, Charleston, South Carolina) is one of the most influential contemporary street artists and graphic designers. Rising from skate culture and guerrilla poster art, he gained global prominence with the OBEY campaign and his 2008 HOPE portrait of Barack Obama. Fairey’s work merges design, propaganda, and social commentary, addressing themes of power, equality, and civic responsibility. His prints and murals reside in major museum collections worldwide, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Victoria Albert Museum. Produced by Fairey and his team at Obey Giant Studios, Los Angeles. The work embodies the artist’s ongoing dialogue between art and activism, uniting French ideals of liberty and fraternity with a universal call for empathy and peace.
