About the Item

This Celadon Vase by Shinobu Kawase exemplifies the serene elegance of celadon. The vessel features simple, graceful curves and a balanced melon-ribbed form that conveys quiet strength and stability. Covered in a soft bluish-green glaze with a jade-like luster, its surface is smooth and luminous, radiating purity and calm. Rather than relying on ornamentation, the work draws beauty from its refined proportions and the subtle depth of its glaze, showcasing Kawase’s mastery of minimalist aesthetics. Shinobu Kawase, born in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture, is a third-generation potter who continues to create there today. Inspired by Song dynasty celadon, he is celebrated for his soft bluish glazes, refined forms, and serene elegance that blend Chinese classicism with Japanese craftsmanship. In 1981, at age 30, he became the youngest recipient of the Japan Ceramic Society Award and later received its Lifetime Achievement Gold Prize in 2014. His works are in over twenty major museum collections worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the British Museum, marking him as Japan’s leading celadon artist.
