Produced in North Africa, this well-preserved Qur’anic manuscript leaf from the 15th century stands out with its harmonious design and luminous gold illumination. It is written in Maghribi mujawhar—a bold and carefully modulated script that is also among the most valued across the western Islamic world. The scribe’s rounded letterforms and elongated horizontals create a rhythmic, visually balanced page, while a central phrase in enlarged gold-filled display script provides a striking focal point and underscores the text’s hierarchical structure.
The main text is executed in black ink with red vocalisation marks, punctuated by gilded rosettes with subtle polychrome accents marking each verse. Along the right margin, two large medallions in gold and blue serve as both textual markers and decorative anchors, hallmarks of late-medieval Maghribi Qur’anic manuscripts. Together with the careful spacing of lines, these features reflect the hallmarks of the Islamic visual tradition: clarity, proportion, and ornament.
The parchment has mellowed to a warm, ivory tone, with gentle handling marks that attest to its devotional use and historic presence.

This Qur’anic manuscript leaf originates from North Africa and is written in the characteristic Maghribi script, recognisable through its rounded contours and extended horizontal profiles. This sensational watercolour painting depicts two Turkish scholars, who recline in a typical Orientalist interior as they study and discuss the Quran. The figures are beautifully rendered in a sketched, painterly style that harks back to Impressionism, dressed in bright Orientalist robes with ornate detailing. The two men are imbued with contrasting characters, the left-hand figure engaged and leaning forward in discussion, whilst the right reclines in thought.
Their setting is marked with Orientalist signifiers, such as the incense lamp and palm plant in the top right-hand corner. Particularly fine detail has been given to the Persian-style rug, which catches the viewer’s eye with its vibrant hues and repeating geometric motif border. Further geometric designs can be seen on the back wall, which utilises circular and zig-zag mosaic patterning. These motifs are replicated in the beautiful frame. A later addition, the frame complements not only the colour palette of the painting with a bright red base, but also the intricate motifs of the painting with gilt foliate decoration.
