About the Item
The Dragon Gate Inkstone Box was crafted in 2012 by master Yumin Wu, using Guizhou Zipaoyu Stone. The inkstone surface is smooth and dense, carved with flowing cloud patterns symbolizing ideas rising like clouds. The lid is decorated with finely carved images of an ao fish and cranes soaring skyward, representing the auspicious theme of “passing the imperial exams with highest honors.” Combining practical use with literati symbolism, the piece reflects both refined craftsmanship and scholarly elegance.
Yu Min Wu, a celebrated Duan inkstone master with over twenty years of experience, was recognized as a National Inkstone Carver in 2016. His work is known for balancing meticulous detail with expressive vitality, often incorporating the stone’s natural qualities into his designs. Found deep in riverbeds, Laokeng stone is dense, smooth, and naturally hydrated, giving it a jade-like texture. It develops a rich patina with use, produces ink evenly without harming brushes, and often carries rare patterns such as ice lines, banana white, or fish-brain crystal, making it the most coveted of all Duan stones.

The Divine Dragon Inkstone was carved in 2012 by master craftsman Wei Ming Huang, using stone from Songkeng, one of the four famous Duanxi quarries.
