About the Item
Anastasia Faiella is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the evolving relationship between language, gesture, and abstraction. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, she brings a rigorous conceptual framework to her practice, shaped by extensive academic training and two decades of exhibition experience.
Faiella earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004. Prior to this, she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Art History at the University of Minnesota, a foundation that deeply informs her understanding of visual culture, historical context, and the theoretical structures that underpin contemporary painting.
Her work investigates how written language transforms through repetition, memory, and physical movement. Beginning with a phrase or fragment sourced from everyday life, she repeatedly inscribes and re-inscribes marks until the original meaning dissolves. The resulting imagery resembles a hybrid between calligraphy, gesture, and abstract form, emphasizing the tension between legibility and opacity. Faiella’s process-driven approach often incorporates performative elements, merging drawing, painting, and movement into a unified visual language.
Throughout her career, she has exhibited widely across the United States, with visibility in California and the Northwestern states. Her paintings and mixed-media works have appeared in contemporary art galleries, cultural institutions, and curated exhibitions focused on gestural abstraction and conceptual mark-making.
In 1998, Faiella received early recognition when she was awarded the Julian Easels Award of Excellence for her submission to The Amsterdam Art Exhibit at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. This honor marked an important milestone in her artistic development and helped shape her ongoing commitment to experimentation, material exploration, and the physicality of mark-making.
Today, she continues to develop a body of work centered on the transformation of language through movement, exploring the threshold where communication becomes abstraction and where gesture serves as both record and expression.
